Try 3: Diamond Art Painting – A Simple Craft for Beginner Crafters

Diamond art painting is a simple, beginner-friendly, low-pressure craft that helped me build focus. If you have been holding off on handicrafts, this could be your starting point.

“Would you like to try doing some crafts?”

My answer would always have been no.

Crafts were never my thing, especially since I cannot draw and my hands are not particularly nimble.

Yet, this craft that I came across recently completely changed my perspective.

It is called Diamond Art Painting. (Don’t worry, no paint is involved. The name…is a little confusing.)

It looked manageable and will add a slight homemade touch to my Chinese New Year decorations at home. So, I decided to give it a try.

What Is Diamond Art Painting?

Diamond art painting is a craft where you stick tiny resin “diamonds” onto a pre-printed adhesive canvas. Each section is labelled with numbers, and you match the diamonds accordingly. It is like paint-by-numbers, except you are placing (or sticking) beads instead of using paint.

Most diamond painting kits come with everything included — the canvas, applicator pen, wax and sorted packets of diamonds — so you do not need to prepare any materials beforehand. That was reassuring for someone like me who prefers clear instructions.

If you are, like me, wondering why is it called “painting”, my best guess is because the finished piece resembles a mosaic painting, even though technically you are sticking rather than painting.

A Quiet Hour of Focus

I sat in my quiet spot at home, prepared a cup of tea, put on some music and started placing the diamonds one by one. The action is simple and repetitive, but that is exactly why diamond art painting works so well for beginners and as a calming activity. You only need to focus on matching the numbers and pressing each piece into place.

I soon became very absorbed, fully present in the task. Not once did I think of checking the notifications or scrolling through my phone. It felt grounding, and for that hour, I felt like the brightest sparkling diamond, simply as a focused woman immersed in one small, steady task.

Tips You Must Know When Starting With Diamond Art Painting

If you are trying diamond art painting, here are a few reminders:

  • Choose a smaller design if time is limited.
  • Do not rush to complete everything in one sitting.
  • Ensure the environment is well-lit.
  • Take a break after every 30 minutes and look at something far. This is to avoid straining your eyes.

Larger diamond painting kits can take time, and it is okay to take a few days (or weeks, or months) to complete it. The point is to enjoy the process, not to tick it off a list.

If you are looking for a simple creative reset, diamond art painting is a manageable place to begin.
