Kota Tinggi Firefly Valley Leisure Park: Where Magic Happens After Dark

Here’s the ultimate guide to viewing fireflies in Malaysia, Kota Tinggi. It’s joy twinkling in the darkness, reminding you that wonder still exists in the everyday.

Estimated read time: 6 minutes

I remember chancing upon the beauty of fireflies in Singapore when I was young. However, with many of the species in decline globally, it’s becoming rarer to see fireflies nowadays. As National Geographic shares, of the 150 firefly species, 20 percent are already threatened with extinction.

To relieve this nostalgic childhood memory and to share this magical beauty with my children, we discovered the Kota Tinggi Firefly Valley Leisure Park in Kota Tinggi, Malaysia.

Getting There: The Journey to Kota Tinggi Firefly Valley Leisure Park

Kota Tinggi Firefly Valley Leisure Park (Google Map) is about an hour from Singapore, close enough for an evening escape.

The drive itself is straightforward until the final stretch. The last 2km into the park is a track full of gravels and rocks. Drive very slowly and you will be fine (your car too). It’s bumpy, but manageable if you take your time.

Try to arrive at around 5.30pm. This will give you some time to explore the on-site mini farm and have dinner before the boat ride at 7.30pm.

Booking the Tour

Reservation is required:

  1. Reach out to the owners via chat platforms like WhatsApp or WeChat.
  2. Confirm whether you’re booking dinner, and if so, finalise your menu choices.
  3. Sort your deposit through bank transfer, Touch and Go, or PayNow.

And you’re set.

The Mini Farm and Pre-Tour Activities

The mini farm is home to many animals such as the rabbits, the goats and the turtles. While it smells exactly like how farms smell and is not large, the children were absolutely delighted looking at the animals and observing their behaviours. There’s also a playground for your little ones to burn off some energy (so they will enjoy the boat ride calmly).

Dinner at Firefly Valley: Better Than Expected

Dinner can be booked whilst reserving your boat tickets. The set meal costs about RM140 to RM260 for three or four people, and we were able to customise the menu beforehand as well. Do note that some items needed a small top-up to swap. The owners and staff were very helpful, so just chat with them (preferably in Mandarin) on your requests.

We opted for the seafood meal, including fried homemade tofu, cereal prawns, lala (clam) soup, deer meat, vegetables, and salted egg crab. We also added buns to mop up the salted egg sauce (must do!!). Overall, the meal was value for money and worth a try, especially if you like homemade food. The salted egg crabs were fresh and meaty, with prawns being the only disappointment.

In terms of setting, you can choose between the main entrance, which is filled with friendly stray dogs, or the back area, where the smell of farm is very noticeable. We opted for the latter, and honestly, once the food arrives, all we could smell was the delicious food in front of us.

Take the time to chill over your meal as the sky shifted from brightness to darkness, building up the anticipation of watching the fireflies naturally.

The Firefly Boat Tour: When Wonder Appears

At around 7.30pm, we were handed life jackets and climbed aboard the boat. The tour costs RM18 per adult and RM12 for children below 120cm. This is very affordable for what you’re about to experience. Our boatman, who doubled as our guide, was very experienced and positioned each passenger carefully for balance. As we pushed off into the darkness, he began sharing stories and facts about the fireflies we were about to meet.

Did you know that adult fireflies live for only a few weeks? In that short time, they light up the night to find a mate, and the females lay dozens of eggs for the next generation before their brief adult life ends. I felt something catch in my chest being reminded that beauty is often fleeting, and we should treasure and appreciate from us.

Photography is not allowed during the boat ride as bright artificial light can interfere with fireflies’ delicate mating signals. The fireflies rely on darkness to communicate and unnecessary flashes or lights can make it harder for them to find each other during their already brief adult lives. Respect the fireflies and protect their environment.

The Magic of Fireflies at Night

As the darkness deepened, the trees came alive.

The guide shared that for the fireflies at Kota Tinggi, males flash three times per second whilst females flash once every three seconds. The lights flickering all around us were their luminous conversation of courtship.

Hundreds of tiny lights scattered across the river like living stars. They pulsed and flickered, creating patterns that shifted constantly. It looked like someone had draped fairy lights across nature itself, except these lights were alive, breathing, dancing.

You will probably find yourself immersing in the beauty and smiling in the darkness, thinking about how the world can still be so beautiful, just like I did. Life isn’t only about hustling from one thing to next, but also about noticing the small, natural moments around us. When a firefly flew past me, it reminded me of a shooting star, and without even thinking, I found myself making a quiet wish.

Reconnecting with Joy

In our everyday rush, we often forget to look for light. We forget that wonder exists in small, fleeting things. Twenty-one days of life, and these creatures spend it glowing. They don’t hesitate or save their light for special occasions.

Watching them reminded me to…

  • Stop saving joy for “someday.” Make it today.
  • Notice the small, luminous moments in my everyday life.
  • Show up for experiences that can’t be captured, only felt.

If everything feels a bit flat, a bit rushed, a bit too much, give this experience a try. It’s not because this is Instagram-worthy (after all, you can’t take photos) or bucket-list impressive, but because sometimes, we need reminding that magic still exists.

Go witness the magical moment whilst you still can and support these disappearing sanctuaries.

Some things are worth the bumpy road.
